All STAR Online trainings will include a blend of synchronous and asynchronous learning (see below for definitions). Look at our Spring 2022 dates for our return to IN PERSON options!

ONLINE LEARNING METHODS
Online courses will include a blend of live online class sessions (synchronous) and self-guided, individual work (asynchronous).
Synchronous Learning: Participants engage in learning simultaneously, often through a live stream web conferencing tool. This could take place as live lectures, interactive group discussions, etc.
Asynchronous Learning: Participants engage in learning via resources (videos, books, articles, etc) on their own time.

As part of our continued learning here at the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding, we are practicing ways to talk about power and acknowledging how certain social advantages bestow power to people in disproportionate ways.
In all of our courses, participants and instructors come from myriad different social positions: we may be working poor from the rural US; we may be upper class from Colombia; we may have inherited land but be cash poor; we may have ancestors who were displaced from land they tended for generations. We might be white middle class from the US but have a burden of health care debt that keeps us living on a precarious edge.
In preparation for your participation in this learning community, please read through the following, reflecting on how your position and identity might be affording you certain advantages.
Consider how and where you fit within these tiered categories. Economic advantages and disadvantages are complex and nuanced, and this list is a simplistic representation of endless configurations that are possible. This exercise is to help us reflect on where we fit within a larger whole. Because of how our society functions, our financial positions are in large part what allow us access to things like higher education and to have the ability to develop skills that further our professional endeavors.
TIER 1 those who are lower income or experiencing underemployment, unemployment, or other financial challenges
TIER 2 those who are employed, have financial resources to meet your needs but may also have a burden of debt and/or limited access to other assets or supports enjoyed by others
TIER 3 those with abundant financial resources. You are able to pay for all your basic needs without any concern, to take vacations regularly.
